America, by Yordani Rodriguez

High school senior Yordani Rodriguez shared this original poem with his classmates in the Freedom and Citizenship program in July 2023. His classmates chose to feature it in their student-published e-newsletter.

As in: we are the leaders of the free world,

As in: negros die and all they get is a hashtag.

As in: the jury gives them a slap in the hand while we get bullets on our backs.

As in: the justice lady was never blind. It was just a lie created by white men to make themself look less miserable.

As in: there's gaps in the system that make these killings a little too predictable.

As in: everyone seems to be woke, but my intelligence is slept at cuz I’m black.

As in: who am I to white men, I ask myself. It seems to me that I'm a black canvas waiting for their trigger lead to rip my skin and make my blood drop like the tears on my mama's face when she gets the call.

As in: everyone looks at us for a better life, the American dream they call it, the American nightmare I call it! The truth is overwhelming and blinding which may be why we refuse to see the facts as they are.

As in: I can’t breathe

Can’t breathe, with a knee on my neck.

As in: we are protected by the people that hate us the most.

As in: if we don't see hundreds of us die we can’t make a change!

As in: I'm a threat because of the color of my skin.

As in: THIS IS AMERICA SON,

This is reality

But know the world is yours,

Examine and question everything,

For knowledge is power,

And remember this, “time is always ripe to do right”
